The American
Red Cross is not a government agency, and relies on
the support of the American people to carry out its
lifesaving mission.
- The Knoxville
Area Chapter is the Red Cross chapter for the following
counties in East Tennessee:
Campbell, Grainger, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon,
Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union.
-
The American
Red Cross responds to over 200 fires a year in our
area, with half of those in Knox County.
We help families with food, clothing,
medication, temporary or permanent housing, personal
items, and anything else they need following a fire
or other disaster.
-
Over 60
East Tennesseans travel across the country to disaster
sites every year, helping fellow
Americans affected by disasters big and small, from
tornadoes and hurricanes to floods and earthquakes.
- The Knoxville
Area Chapter sends and receives over 1,800 emergency
messages every year on behalf or military personnel
and their families. That
is nearly six messages every day of the year traveling
to and from Knoxville.
- Over 22,000
people were trained in one or more lifesaving safety
courses last year by the Knoxville Area Chapter of the
American Red Cross.
- The School
Health Clinic Program, started in 1966, is in 36 schools
in our area. When a child falls ill or is
injured, trained school helth clinic volunteers can
provide care until parents or advanced medical personel
arrive.
- There are
an average of 25 to 30 treatments by First Aid
Station Team volunteers at every University of Tennessee
home football game. Trained First Aid
volunteers provide care to people who fall, get sunburned,
stung by a bee, come down with a sudden illness, or
have any other health-related emergency. Games with
extreme temperatures are generally the worst for responses,
such as the Fresno State game in 2003, when over 110
people were treated, mostly for heat-related illnesses.
- There are
over 3,300 Red Cross volunteers and 18 paid staff in
the Knoxville area.
- Over 90 cents
of every dollar donated to the Red Cross locally goes
directly to programs.
- The Knoxville
Area Chapter was founded on February 6, 1917.
