Youth Services

Youth Services

Since the founding of the Junior Red Cross in 1917, youth and the American Red Cross have been partners. Today, the involvement of young people with the Red Cross is more important than ever. Our goal is to provide young people with meaningful opportunities for education, training, and volunteer/community service so that they remain a part of the Red Cross family throughout their lives. Across the country youth and young adults up to age 25 make up 40 percent of all Red Cross volunteers. In the Knoxville area, youth are a very important part of our work as well.

Education Programs

The American Red Cross has been teaching health and safety courses in the Knoxville area for more than eighty years. American Red Cross courses are not only educational and informative, but are also fun! Volunteers at schools, churches, and other community organizations teach these courses in the community. We hope you will take advantage of our resources and teach an American Red Cross course at your school, church, or community organization!

Special Programs for Schools and Teachers

The American Red Cross offers a variety of resources for local schools and teachers. Many schools in our area take advantage of our free in-service training on a variety of Health and Safety topics. Many PTAs and PTOs utilize our training and teaching materials to empower parents to provide special programs in the schools. Local teachers enjoy using our nationally developed standards based lesson plans and borrowing our manikins, videos, and posters. For more information on these programs or to become an instructor, call (865) 584-2999 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Volunteer and Community Service Opportunities

Special Events

Various special events require additional volunteers. Youth have been very active in Safety City, the Veterans' Day Parade, and even served on the United Way Youth Allocations Committee. You never know what opportunities you may have with Special Events.

Youth Office Workers

On school holidays, kids can volunteer in our offices doing everything from clerical work such as copying, typing, and folding, to designing layouts, checking in manikins, setting up classrooms, washing disaster vehicles, and sorting bandages. There is always plenty to do and kids can come and learn about several career paths through working side-by-side with our staff.

Youth Council

Volunteers who have exhibited both excellent leadership potential and a strong commitment to the American Red Cross and its fundamental principles may be chosen to serve on the Youth Council. This group of youth meets regularly to select and implement project ideas, which will help local youth to become more involved in the mission of the Red Cross. Youth Council members also represent our chapter publicly as needed and are given the opportunity to attend National Convention.

The Knoxville Area Chapter provides a number of ways for youth ages 13-18 to get involved in helping others. There are many areas of service in which you can use your unique talents. At the American Red Cross, volunteers lead the organization and provide the services. Our youth volunteers give their time to established programs and develop new ideas.
