Pack the basics:
- At least three days’ worth of nonperishable
food and water.
- At least a one-to two-week supply of essential medication
such as blood pressure pills, antidepressants, inhalers
and insulin, the latter with cooler bags.
- One change of clothing. Include a jacket if you might
be outdoors and a hat if you are sensitive to sunlight.
- Eyeglasses, hearing aids.
- Emergency contact names and phone numbers.
- Copies of your driver’s license and credit
cards.
- Cash and coins for at least one to two weeks. The
total depends on the number of people in your family.
Remember that ATM’s may not have power, and banks
will be empty if areas have been evacuated. Coins can
come in handy for pay phones and laundry machines.
- Flashlights and extra batteries.
- A radio. If you have a National Oceanic & Atmospheric
Administration Weather Radio, you’re not dependent
on batteries. An NOAA radio, available in an electronic
or sporting goods store, broadcasts weather forecasts
24 hours a day.
- Baby food/or pet food. Every family situation is
different. Planning for infants is different than if
you’re a retired couple, for instance.
